Sunshine Stars forward, Alimi Sikiru has expressed his joy in grabbing the opener for the Owena Whales in the 4-2 thrashing of ABS FC at Kwara State Stadium on Matchday 28.
The versatile goal poacher, who can also play down the flanks, scored seconds into the second half, calmly controlling a long ball from Oke, which he slotted home past ABS FC’s Nurudeen Mudashiru.
The goal was the start of a bitter day for ABS FC, who got their first home defeat Of the season. Former ABS FC striker, Ajibola Otegbeye soon added the second for Sunshine Stars minutes after the first, from a corner kick, although the Saraki boys had the chance of coming back into the game, after Oyedeji Samuel scored from the spot to make 2-1, but Abbey Joseph solo-effort goal displacing Ernest Governor gave them no chance. Ebuka Anaekwa also scored the second for ABS FC, but substitute Ezekiel Thompson sealed the six-goal thriller match with his goal late in the match, despite one of his goal being wrongly ruled for offside.
In an interview with Sportlens360, Alimi Sikiru expressed his joy in scoring the opener.
‘I feel really good scoring the opener. We’ve worked really hard, doing most of our shooting exercise in training, and I’m happy we could put that into the game against ABS FC. When I saw the chance at goal, I needed to take it, because it’s been long I had an opportunity like that.’
The former Warri Wolves forward continued, praising his new coach, Duke Udi, who got the job after Austin Eguavoen’s resignation.
‘The coach has changed our mentality, he is pushing us hard and I think everything is working in our favor. Sunshine Stars is a big club and have been one of the biggest in the Country, I don’t think this is our rightful position for now, so we are working hard to put the club back to where it belongs and I think with more effort, we will get there.’
Sunshine Stars are currently placed 15th on the NPFL log, and will play home against Nasarawa United in the next Matchday on July 16th.
