Wimbledon 2018 Day 1: Roger Federer sets record in win over Lajovic, Serena and Venus win on Day One
Eight time Wimbledon Champion, Roger Federer wasted no time in displacing Dusan Lajovic in a 6-1 6-3 6-4 first round win on day one of the 2018 Wimbledon. The Swiss Maestro also set another milestone by playing his record 103rd Wimbledon match. Milos Raonic also got on, in a comfortable start, as he ousted Liam Broady 7-5 6-0 6-1, while Gael Monfils won the all-French affair with a 7-6 7-5 6-4 win against Richard Gasquet.
The much anticipated match of the Day was the clash between Swiss Stan Wawrinka and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. The three-time Grand Slam winner was against all odds to win that game especially after dropping to Number 224 in the ATP rankings. Stan started the game slowly, losing the first set 1-6 but went on to win three straight sets 7-6 7-6 6-4 to complete a shocking win over Grigor Dimitrov considering his recent poor performances.
In the women’s category, Serena Williams and Venus started their campaign with a win. Although, Venus lost the first set against Johanna Larsson in a tiebreak but she fought back to clear all hopes of upset on the opening day by taking the second set 6-2 and the final set 6-1. However, Serena on the other hand won in straight sets 7-5 6-3 against Aranxta Rus.
There were two upsets in the women’s category on day one – One which was from Magdalena Rybarikova, the 19th seed and 2017 semifinalist who lost to Sorana Cirstea in straight sets 7-5 6-3, while 4th seed Sloane Stephens also crashed out of 2018 Wimbledon in a shocking loss to World Number 55, Donna Vekic 6-1 6-3.
Action resumes on Tuesday as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova, Simona Halep among others begin their campaign in the 2018 Wimbledon.
