Former Nigerian International Benedict Akwuegbu took us back to how he started his career and how excited he was when he was signed for 5000 Naira.
Benedict Akwuegbu, who started his football career at the age of 15, got signed to Mighty Jets of Jos. He revealed in an interview with Let’s Gist Naija football, a Whatsapp platform for Journalists that he was so excited about being transferred to Mighty jets for a ‘huge’ price of 5000 Naira.
He didn’t get the support from his Dad to play football at the start but on signing for Mighty jets for 5000 Naira, they story changed.
“At the initial stage, my father didn’t support me to play, he wanted me to go to school but when I was invited to play for the National team and representing Nigeria at the U-17 World Cup, then my father started got interested and encouraged me.
When I was signed for Mighty jets of Jos for a fee of 5000 Naira, I was confused and didn’t know what to with the money, I went straight to my Dad and gave him the money. My salary was 800 Naira in 1988. It was a big thing for myself and my family”
Akwuegbu won the best foreign player for his exploits during his time Grazer AK in the Austrian league and was nicknamed the “Austrian Bomber” by the press for his abilities on the field of play.
